Crumhorn Anthology, Book 3 – 3 – Original Pieces Scored for Crumhorns
This edition has brought together all the known pieces from the Renaissance that were either composed for, or mentioned as being suitable for, crumhorns. Full of background notes and research, it proves that crumhorns were used in both large and small ensembles and they would have been played in mixed consort.
The collection includes a range of pieces including two pieces specifically written for crumhorn by Johann Schein as well as a seven verse setting of a psalm by Thomas Stoltzer. There are also a range of pieces marked in part books and scores as being suitable for crumhorns together with pieces from the 1539 comedy Il Commodo which included crumhorns in mixed consorts. Composers include Alamire, Senfl, Praetorius and Stoltzer, ranging from 3 to 9 parts.
